The Meaning Behind Our Name
When we formed the company, we struggled to find a name that felt right. We’d played around with words like ‘Bright’, ‘Tree’ and ‘Oak’ but nothing quite landed. Then, as we sat discussing ideas, the sun shone through the huge oak tree outside the window and someone suggested ‘Bright Oak’.
Curious, we Googled it – and discovered that ‘Bright Oak’ was an ancient term for the trees where the Vikings held their ‘Wapentakes’: gatherings where they passed laws, resolved disputes and made decisions together. The connection between our name and the idea of coming together to solve problems felt perfect.
The deal was sealed when we learned that one of the most famous of these oaks – the Shire Oak in Headingley – once stood near where one of our Directors grew up.
