ITIL® Service Validation & Testing (SVT) is a one-day practitioner workshop for test professionals who already hold ISTQB® Foundation level or equivalent qualifications. This isn’t an introduction to testing – delegates arrive with established test technique – and it doesn’t repeat ground that ISTQB already covers well: test types, test design techniques, defect management or test reporting.
What it adds is the layer ISTQB doesn’t touch: the service management and governance context that decides what “”valid”” actually means at an organisational level. The day is built around ITIL® Version 5’s updated service quality model – Utility, Warranty, Sustainability and Experience (UWSE) – and shows delegates how to use it as a practical validation framework, not just a diagram in a textbook.
Across four modules, delegates map a real release scenario against all four UWSE criteria, trace a change through Release, Change and Deployment Management to find where SVT evidence gets captured and used, draft Experience Level Agreement (XLA)-style and sustainability-based acceptance criteria, and complete a structured self-assessment of their own testing practice’s maturity. SVT sits within ITIL’s Create, Design and Deliver (CDD) value stream, and that positioning threads through the whole day.
The course runs as an open one-day workshop and is also available as a bespoke, closed-cohort session delivered in-house to a single testing team, built around your own release and change scenarios.
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
– Explain the purpose and scope of ITIL® SVT and where it sits in the service value chain
– Apply the ITIL® UWSE service quality model to a release scenario, identifying coverage and gaps across all four dimensions
– Map SVT touchpoints and evidence handoffs across Release, Change and Deployment Management
– Draft XLA-style, experience-based acceptance criteria for a realistic scenario
– Draft ESG-aligned, sustainability-based acceptance criteria for a realistic scenario
– Complete a structured self-assessment of their testing practice against the SVT maturity model
– Identify and prioritise improvements to embed UWSE thinking into ongoing test practice
This course is designed for:
– Test managers and test leads responsible for release sign-off decisions
– Senior testers and test analysts holding ISTQB® Foundation level or above
– QA leads working within, or alongside, ITIL-aligned service management functions
– Release, change and deployment managers who want a shared vocabulary with their test teams
– Testing teams preparing to take on wider service validation responsibilities
ISTQB® Foundation level or equivalent test qualification and experience is required. No prior ITIL® knowledge is needed – the course assumes little to none and builds what’s required in Module 1.
This is not a testing-fundamentals course. Delegates without an established test background should start with an ISTQB® Foundation course, or BrightOak’s ITIL® (Version 5) Foundation, before attending.
There is no examination for this course. It’s a practitioner workshop, not a certification – delegates work through the day’s exercises and a structured self-assessment rather than sitting a test. Everyone who completes the day receives a BrightOak Certificate of Attendance, and the course counts towards approximately 6 hours of CPD.
