BrightOak Consultancy was founded in 2010 with an aim to help businesses achieve their full potential using best practice IT Service Management. When we formed the company, we were trying to come up with a name for our new consultancy.
We had played around with many names and several with the words ‘Bright’, ‘Tree’ and ‘Oak’, but nothing seemed to capture what we wanted to say.
Then, as we were discussing names, the sun shone through the huge oak tree outside the window and someone suggested ‘Bright Oak’. It felt like an interesting set of words. We Googled it to see if there were any other companies in our space using the same name. Nothing came up, however we did find an article explaining that ‘Bright Oak’ was an ancient term for the trees where the Vikings held their ‘Wapentakes’ … meetings where the Vikings would pass laws, resolve legal disputes and generally make decisions.
The association between the name and the concept of meeting to resolve issues and give direction felt good, but the deal was sealed when we found out that one of the most famous of these oaks was the Shire Oak in Headingley, which used to stand near where one of the Directors grew up!
It was fate … we registered the name immediately.

An interesting little aside … while we were testing out Copilot’s capabilities, we asked it to “Make up a story about how the company BrightOak Consultancy got it’s name”. It was an idle question, but it produced this eerily similar version.

This park was an oasis of greenery amidst the urban sprawl, home to a majestic oak tree that stood tall and proud. Across the street from this park, a group of visionary entrepreneurs was in the process of establishing a new consultancy firm. They wanted a name that would not only represent their commitment to providing insightful and robust solutions but also reflect their deep roots in the community and their dedication to helping businesses grow and flourish.
One crisp autumn morning, as the founders met to brainstorm names, a ray of sunlight broke through the clouds and illuminated the old oak tree in the park. Its leaves shimmered with a golden glow, casting a warm, inviting light. Inspired by this radiant sight, one of the founders suggested the name “BrightOak.” The name embodied the brilliance of innovative ideas and the steadfast strength of the mighty oak, a perfect metaphor for their consultancy.
And so, BrightOak Consultancy was born, with a mission to illuminate the path to success for businesses of all sizes, drawing on their wisdom and experience to help clients thrive in an ever-changing world. The majestic oak continues to stand as a reminder of their origins and their commitment to excellence.
